Acne is most common in the second and third decade of life.
Moderate to severe acne, also called cystic acne or nodular acne, can leave scars.
Scars can often be seen, despite being covered with makeup, which creates an irregular skin surface. They can be stubborn to deal with. Microneedling is used as a treatment for acne scars. Microneedling is also called Collagen Induction Therapy, as the production of collagen, is one of the major effects of treatment!
There are studies showing clear benefits of using Microneedling treatment post-acne scars. The study concluded: Multiple minimally invasive sessions of skin microneedling are an effective treatment for post-acne atrophic scars as it stimulates the repair processes with the advantage of being a relatively risk-free, in-office procedure with minimal patient recovery time.
The study also showed improvement one month after starting the treatment and significant improvement 3 months after the course, thus at 6 months after the start.
Procedure Microneedling for (post) acne scars
When you come for treatment, we will check for any signs of infection or inflammation. A numbing cream will be applied. After 45-60 minutes, the numbing cream is removed and the treatment area is cleaned.
With our advanced dermapen, we’ll adjust the depth of the needles according to the severity of your scars and the location of the scars. Microneedling takes approximately 10-20 minutes, depending on the extent of the scars.You may be advised to use an antibiotic ointment, a moisturiser, a gold mask or nothing, after the procedure.
The number of sessions, depend on the severity of the scars. We recommend 5-8 treatments at 2-4-6 weeks interval.
What to expect after medical skin needling for acne scars
After procedure, you may have some erythema or redness. Usually, that will disappear in 24 hours, while in some cases, it may even take up to 48 hours. As always, with trauma to the skin, it’s important that exposure to sunlight or UV radiation is minimised. We recommend using SPF50 and SPF30 for dark complexion.
One day after the procedure, you may clean your face as usual and apply make up. No use of exfoliants or glycolic acids.
In the following days, skin dryness or flaking may occur, due to increased cell turn over in the skin. Your skin may shed in the days thereafter.
One week after Microneedling for acne scars, your skin will usually be smoother and more radiant.
After one month, patients normally start noticing a change in the appearance of the acne scars. The treatment should be continued, as advised by the clinic. Usually, the course is completed in 3-4 months. As it takes time for the skin to produce more collagen, it can take up to 3 months after the treatment, to see the effect of the procedure.
